Will the Real Maleficent Please Cast a Spell?

In 1959, Disney Studios made "Sleeping Beauty", and the evil fairy "Maleficent" was a major character in it. Now, a live-action film about Maleficent is being made, with the alive-and-well Angelina Jolie in the starring role. I think she's a marvelous actress, but I really don't know if she's the Maleficent-type.

In 1962,  Mexican actress Maria Félix starred in the motion picture, "La Bandida".  Does she look more like Maleficent than anyone else does? I'll let you judge for yourself!

  1. I think Angelina will be able to pull it off! I mean, she has that stone cold -If you look at me wrong I will kill you..- face. And she's quite the gifted actress. I don't think, they could have found anyone else, who could correctly play the part as well as her, who also has the appropriate look.

    1. We'll have to wait and see. It seems that instead of creating new stories and new characters nowadays, they're just milking the old stuff and trying to re-make it over. I got that feeling with "Wicked".

    2. yeah your right, i actually didnt really enjoy that show very much. the first half was good but then i actually got a little bored in the second. after everyone telling me how great of a show it was it was a bit of a let down to be honest. Im sensing that your not a fan of Angelina? :)

    3. I think Angelina is an awesome actress--plus, she's gorgeous and what a lot of guys would call "a babe". DIsney's original Maleficent was neither of those things, so I don't think it's type-casting.

    4. That is true. Who would you cast as her? I would probably go for maybe an unknown actress who has aged a little bit ...but thats just because i like when hollywood gives aspiring actors a break.

    5. Gee, I don't know--but she'd have to look the part--fiery eyes, slightly thin lips, high cheekbones and a strong chin, and a statuesque body that's lean but not skinny. And the voice would have to be close to the original.
The drawings of Maleficent I've posted here are from the first section of the movie "Sleeping Beauty". 16 years later in the story, she looks very different and is much much uglier than this. I guess it was such an elusive character design, that even the Disney artists had trouble keeping her looking the same. Changes creep in, and characters tend to undergo visual changes--and it sure happened on Sleeping Beauty, especially since it took 6 years to animate! Anyway, an actress who looks/sounds/acts like the animated version would get my vote!

    6. Its funny because i was thinking about you when i was watching the behind the scenes of this movie because i recently bought a very expensive copy of this film (its one of my favourites) and thats amazing that you noticed that! im gunna have to re-watch it again haha. I know right!...6 years. Apparently a lot of people left the studio because of the stress involved with its creation, they went and opened their own studio aswell!

    7. I have a lot of picture books that came out when the movie Sleeping Beauty did, and the artwork is amazing. I also recently purchased an expensive book from France with big photographs of the actual drawings and backgrounds used in the film.
If you have a chance to see the DVD of Sleeping Beauty from 2003, take a look at that one. The colors in that version match the original artwork in my books. A good example is the costume of the jester--his sleeves are moss green, but they've been turned brown in the Blu-Ray version. I have reason to believe a lot of colors were changed a lá Photoshop in the Blu-Ray version. I get queasy watching it!

    1. Yes! Even her voice is like Maleficent! I liked her acting in "La Bandida". I first saw that movie in a theater--and when Maria Felix is speaking, the people in the movie theater were silent! That movie was very much like a Disney movie. I also liked Dolores del Rio in "Las Abandonadas". It's super old, but perfect Mexican cinema!
      I'm glad you like Animan's videos! :D
