A Sneak Peek

Here's a frame from Animan's next video, "Super Hero". Of course, that's not his REAL name. It will be revealed when the time is right.The animation for the first 1/3 of this video is done, so everything is going fine (after a very slow start).

Animan's friends deserve to know what's happening, and I want to share that on this blog. At the same time, I don't want to give so much away that it spoils the surprise. That's Animan's dilemma!  I promise more sneak pictures as I continue working on the video.

These two comments came to me through my e-mail address from the same friend:

1) Wow, looks like I'm going to fall in love again with the upcoming production. You always give me this feeling of anxiousness for the next installment. Tell me, about how long is this project going to be; like, 14min long? Keep up the momentum on this, I’m ready to buy already!

Animan says: "This is just the way I want you to feel! Anticipation! It builds up the emotion. Animan wants the final product to be just as good as what you imagined, if not more! Yes, it will be 14 minutes of wild and crazy fun."

2) no comment? That's strange...

Animan says: "Please feel free to send your comments to the comments area on the blog--they're so good, that I want EVERYBODY to read them!"

Here's another comment that came through to my e-mail address which I'll address here:

you’re not checking your blog site to update the comments?

Actually, every comment coming into my blog also comes into my e-mail box, so I'm always aware of each and every comment which cums in.  If the comment is something like, "How long does it take to make a video?" Then I can give a concrete answer, such as "It varies, but usually between 2 and 3 months".  But if the comment is something like, "I love Animan videos!", then for me to write something like, "Thank you, my good man!" might make me sound conceited.  A more usual Animan-style response is for me to read the comment, and just silently bask in the love that inspired it, and say a silent prayer of thanks to the one who was kind enough to send it.  In any case, each and every comment gets read, and whenever possible, answered. Also please bear in mind that Animan lives in Asia, and a lot of comments or video orders are sent to me right after I've gone to bed, so there will always be a time-lag. :-)

Animation Tip #6

These are pages from the National Geographic magazine, August 1963. The Disney studio was just finishing up work on "The Sword in the Stone" at that time. This is how all Disney animated features were produced until the advent of computers.

Animation Tip #5

I like to refer to the old way of making animation as "The Stone-Age Way".  See for yourself all the things that are necessary. And don't forget a knowledge of the basic techniques!  The old way is so expensive, requires so much equipment, and is so difficult, that it's not easy for one person to make a long animation in color. Coloring each drawing with animation paints takes a very long time. Above all, doing animation this way is super expensive! Animan does not recommend this difficult venture.

Doing animation with computer software is convenient.  There is no need for a camera or projector. There is no need to buy expensive acetate sheets, expensive paints or flood lamps. There is no need for a special camera or camera stand.  It is now possible for one person to make an animation in color, in widescreen and with stereophonic sound!  Animan recommends this way of making animation!

Animation Tip #4

A lot of Animan's friends have asked how animation is drawn. Before I started drawing animation using a Wacom tablet and animation software, I had a homemade light table, and I learned to draw animation on paper.
One technique I still use is "The Inbetween Method", and you can see here how it works. Basically, you plan the beginning and the ending of the action, and then make drawings for the action inbetween.

Concrete Jungle

Here's another scene of the alley in the city. 

The next step will be to draw and animate the characters in this scene. It is important that they can be seen clearly. If they can't, then the background will be changed. I might make it darker or lighter, or change the colors. The colors must be constant, from scene to scene.

Today's Background

In keeping with the big city theme, here's the background for a scene taking place in a dark alley. That in itself would suggest "loads" of possibilities.

Night Time Horizon

This "mysterious" picture is a background from Animan's next video. The video is less than 1/6th finished, and there is a mountain of work to do on it yet. But I never worry, because the more I work on it, the faster the pace starts to go. It's like doing a jigsaw puzzle--in the beginning, only the pieces around the edges can be understood. And then, as more and more pieces are filled in, the process speeds up, and the puzzle is completed. Making an Animan video is very much like that.

Another Picture Off the Web

I found this interesting picture, entitled "Decollette", and it seems perfect for Animan's World. It's a watercolor painting done by a French artist whose name I cannot decipher. If anyone knows the artist's name, please send your comment to this post!

The Big City

Here's a background from the next Animan video. We've had stories in the country (Camp), the beach (Coach Ben's Big Beach Adventure), and the suburbs (Sex Ed, Twist Party), as well as an exotic foreign country (Carmen). So, a story with an urban theme seemed like the next logical step.

One of Animan's Favorite Paintings

Recently I did a temporary post and put this painting on it. Several readers wanted to know the name of it, and who painted it. Animan has done his homework and can now reveal the title of the work and the name of the artist. It's "Silver Slipper" by Waldo Pierce. It was painted during the 1930's. The Silver Slipper was an establishment adjacent to Sloppy Joe's in Key West, Florida.

Animan loves this wild picture. The sign over the door says "No vulgar dancing", but the sailors don't seem to be paying any attention. They are full of sexual energy and really burning up the dance floor. The band in the background is interesting, because the drummer is pounding the bass drum and hitting the cymbal in a very un-jazzlike way--it's more like a German polka. And the drummer's chair looks as if it's about to fall off the stage! Although the painting may not be considered as "high-class art" by many, this painting is absolutely delightful, and shows how much animation can be found in non-moving art.

Hey Animan,    Just wanted to let you know that I recently purchased your last 3 videos & they "blew me away" (literally!)!!  All three were amazing but adding the sound with the voices to the last two really added to the whole experience.  The bullring scene in Carmen was especially "unique" & way "HOT"-- for a moment there I almost thought the bull was going to mount Escamillo to complete the tagteam effect!!  Again, excellent composition & animation for a genre which heretofore did not exist!  Please keep producing these amazing features!!        J.

A Man After My Own Heart

In early 1941, Walt Disney and a group of his artists flew to South America to gather material for their upcoming animated film, "Saludos Amigos". They visited Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Recently I came across these pictures of Walt Disney at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I don't remember any scenes like this in the movie, so perhaps Walt was just taking these home movies for his own personal "research".  It looks like he has excellent taste in subject matter! My only complaint is that the swimsuits are WAY too large.

Getting Started

Every time I make a new video, it's a slow process at first. I only have an idea, and a few rough sketches. There are almost no backgrounds painted, and I don't know how many different characters there will be. So step by step, I start animating characters, and I try to get a feeling of what kind of a place they are living in.

As I make more and more backgrounds, I start to understand what the place is and how it looks. As I animate more and more characters, I start to see what their relationships are, and I know what they would do and not do.

As I was finishing up Carmen, the process was very fast at the end. I could see where the story was going, and I knew just what I wanted to see on the screen. Now I'm back to square one, starting over again! Although I'm not sure where I'm going, it's fun getting used to the new story--and it feels like an adventure.

Something New

Wow--it has already been over a week since our last post. As you can see, I've already started drawing the next video, and like Carmen, this one will also have colored lines on the characters. 
As I get more animation drawn, I'll be posting more drawings. For the moment, this is it!

Unfortunately, a couple of e-mails bounced back. The senders gave me e-mail addresses that end in @comcast.net.  A few months ago, I received some video orders from comcast.net addresses and was able to fill the orders with no problem. For some strange reason, I'm no longer able to get through now! Technology fails us again.

Here's the message I keep getting:

For the two gentlemen who haven't heard from me yet (because I can't get through), I have messages for both of you in the comments section of the last post.  I'm sorry about this mixup.

well...i have now watched carmen to the point of total exhaustion (too much information lol) and all i can say is you have another big fat hit on your hands....my local opera company is doing a production of carmen next year and i have a feeling i will be squirming in my seat trying to concentrate on the production while images of your video are dancing in my head.....i know a former television movie review show used to give films "two thumbs up"....well, it isn't the thumb that's up, but it's way way way up....lol....oh hell i guess i better take matters into my hand and watch your incredible video again....i can tell i'm not going to get much done this weekend....lol.....btw: what's next????   lol....i have all kinds of ideas.....btw...i know i said i was gonna be late for work...after i watched the video...i just called in and took a vacation day.....wink

Carmen is Nearing Completion!

Here is the workflow for "Carmen".

WHAT HAS BEEN FINISHED

1. Painting backgrounds

2. Drawing characters

3. Animating the characters and objects

STILL TO BE DONE

1. Assembling all the different scenes into one video

2. Putting in all the sound elements and effects

3. Putting in the music 

So now, one by one, the hundreds of scenes must be assembled, one by one, and finally the sound must be put in. I promise to have it ready by August 20th, or my name isn't Animan!

Animating a Horse

Animating the walk of a human being is difficult enough, but animating a four-legged animal can be very challenging.  Here is a test I made for the horses which pull the carriage of Escamillo through the city. 

A Funny E-Mail!

OMG thank you soo much man!

I ended up showing one of my 'straight' friends your videos and we ended up hooking up! We were laughing our asses off because my friend looks and acts exactly like Freddie (even the whole "my dick has never been this hard" he had already said it a few times and when Freddie said it during 'CAMP' we lost it haha) and I'm bulky and hairy bottom like Larry but I have long hair and his is short haha. I just wanted to thank you because it was the funnest night I've had in a while! :)

Happy Summer to You

It's very hot all over the world, and Animan's studio is no exception. My trusty electric fan keeps a gentle breeze blowing, so it's not so unbearable.  

Summer is already 1/2 over!  And Carmen has been in production for 5 months now. My biggest hope is that all the extra time and work will be visible on the screen.  I want this to be a good show.....
