The other day, I had some off time, and so I got my iPad and started searching for some midcentury art or photos that I could have some fun with. I can't remember where, but I found this rather mysterious photograph. One thing that struck me was how dressed-up the family is.
I suspect that there must have been a contest of some sort, where the winner would receive a visit from an actor who plays Tarzan, dressed in jungle attire. And of course, the photographer came along to commemorate the occasion with a photo, and he probably suggested that the lucky winner of the contest reach out to touch Tarzan's G-string. Lucky kid! (If it were me, I'd never wash my hand again...)
So you know me; the minute I saw this, my devious little mind started concocting a deliciously naughty storyline. In order to help the word balloons stand out, I took the liberty of colorizing the photo (below). For those of you who simply hate colorized anything, you may feast your eyes on the picture above, in glorious black and white (minus the dialogue).

DeleteMy,my, my...are we suggesting a burly wild man of the jungle as another Animan star? I always preferred the old classics, with weissmuller compared the the more modern stuff where tarzan is too lanky and hairless to do anything for me. So I definitely share that fantasy with you, Animan. Think it could become more? No pressure of course, I trust your judgement in whatever's in the pipeline.

I was never fond of Disney’s animated Tarzan—watching his run his bare feet over miles of crusty tree trunks always seemed like such a painful thing, I could never concentrate on the story.
DeleteI think the body language in this photograph is hot because 1) This Tarzan seems to enjoy attention from his male fans as well as female, 2) The young man gazes up at Tarzan with the most adoring expression, 3) He’s touching Tarzan’s only item of skimpy clothing, 4) Tarzan’s got his hand on the young man’s shoulder, urging him not to stop, 5) If the young guy’s hand were only 10 inches further to the right, this would be a very steamy picture! 6) Being a sex object for a younger man is a new, delightful feeling for this Tarzan, and he cannot get enough, 7) the young fellow’s parents are looking on approvingly. The homoerotic vibes are popping out all over the place.

Although my films represent only a tiny part of the whole, I hope that we can all have something in common. My search brought me to briansdriveintheater.com where I found a poor-quality version, under which was written: “Mike Henry in his parents’ Pittsburgh home in the mid 1960s.” So, the younger man may be a brother or a cousin. Wow.
DeleteI saw a family resemblance in their faces, I was hoping he was his dad but if his parents are in the back it would make sense if he's his brother or something, and I also wouldn't mind that haha!

ReplyDeleteI’m glad you enjoyed it! My only regret is that I wasn’t able to find a better quality copy of this photo. It must have been printed in a magazine or comic book in a relatively small size, or something. If I find a better quality copy, then I will definitely make a “new-and-improved” version!
