Japanese Woodblock Prints

As a follow-up to the Tagata Shrine in the last post, I thought I'd post some old Japanese woodblock prints.  These are called "Shunga" (春画) which means "spring pictures". Most of the Shunga produced in Japan in the olden days had heterosexual content--but there were also a few like these.

I have always been fascinated with these pictures. I especially like the interesting ways that the bodies are entwined, and the way that some pictures show someone peeking in through a door or window! I think they have had a lot of influence on me, and it's visible in my work.

After WWII, pictures like these could not be seen or sold in Japan. It was illegal to own or show them, and when they appeared in art books, they were always censored, and the interesting body parts were covered and hidden. But in the 1990's, these pictures began to be treated as art, and books filled with Shunga appeared in bookstores throughout Japan. Now, they are considered as part of Japan's art heritage.

  1. Cool, especially the soldiers--is that a Japanese screwing a westerner? reminds me of the uniformed doorman in "poker game" who moonlights off-duty as one mean ass-fucker in the neighbor's binoculars and gets his come-uppance in the end, literally, as he pays for it thru the ass himself, without protest.
still, I think you saved the best for tumblr--that thru the curtain situation really does something for me.
    thanks

  2. Yes, the one with the soldiers was made during the Japanese-Russian War (1904~1905). The writing says that the Russian soldier's name is "Ro-suke"--which is "Ro" from "Roshiya" (Russia) and -suke, a suffix for male names. It says "The Japanese soldier, nail him down quick!", and the Russian soldiers in the back are saying, "Rosuke! Hurry up, and get outta there!" Even the Japanese on the right side of the page has Japanese written out in roman letters. It says "(Rosuke: "I feel like I'm going to die" (probably talking about how nice it's starting to feel).
I'm glad you like the last installment of Japanese art--I'm not quite sure what the situation is, but I cut out the right page of that, because it shows a young woman sleeping inside the mosquito net--and on the left page, it's the young man going in to join her--but he bumps into an older man, probably his father, who shouldn't have been trying to enter the sleeping space. But that's ok, because Dad gets it in the end, as you say. I'll try to post some more Japanese prints--they can be surprisingly exciting!

  3. BTW that Chinese doorman in Poker Game could star in his own video. There must be a lot of hot Dick & Ass coming thru that door that could put him in a spicy Szechuan Beef sandwich!

I would like to personally make a donation if that's possible?

    1. That's very kind of you. Of course, donations are very welcome! If it's possible to send money "for services" through PayPal, that would work best for me. The sending address is: heluleka@yahoo.co.jp
If you do choose to make a donation, by all means include the e-mail address you normally use--that way I can thank you and also mail you the download link to my upcoming video when it's completed.
      Thank you!

  6. Hi!
With each day of work I do on my upcoming video, I get closer and closer to the finish line. As a rough estimate, I don't think the release date will be any later than the 10th of April. Of course, I'll try to release it as soon as is possible.
Prior to release, what you will see on my blogs is this:
    1) Drawings, sketches and screen grabs from the new video, along with a short synopsis
    2) A trailer
    3) Announcement that I have started accepting pre-orders
    4) Formal announcement of the release
I'm also looking forward to it! I've worked hard on the animation and it shows. The characters will also be very chatty and that will give them more personality, I think.

  7. Did I mention the Poker Game Doorman could easily carry a whole video on his own: with all the hot dick and ass passing thru his door .he could easily find himself in the middle of any number of Spicy Oriental Beef sandwiches. If I already did, I apologize
