Animan's Animation Software

Many of Animan's fans are curious about what animation software he uses. Up to a few weeks ago, I was using ANIMATE PRO 3. Recently, Toon Boom Animation had a special discount on their best software. After finishing the Palm Springs video, Animan began using Harmony. Here's a short demo about what this awesome software can do!
Want to see some more cool demos?

Toon Boom's software is very advanced in the field of "cut-out puppets". Animan has used them before, but does not depend upon them very much. With puppets, it's possible to make a lot of animation quickly. But puppets tend to look stiff at times, no matter how well they're done.

Animan prefers to draw his actors by hand--in the traditional, old Hollywood style--that way, they have enough "jiggle" and "bounce", if you know what Animan means!

Basically, this software functions like ANIMATE PRO 3, but there are way more special effects, as you can see. In order to learn these new things, Animan will be studying hard, and hopefully learning more, so that the next videos can be even better.

  1. What a wonderful software it is, hope it's not too hard to learn :) You'll have to amaze us ;)

    1. It's 10% study, and 90% experimentation. I promise the next cartoon will amaze you! ;)

  2. I am glad you are improving on techniques, it's great news to here! Great videos but if I could critique one thing it would be the internal scenes, somethings not quite adding up? You always get an very positive complements but I hope we all can collectively help with critiques so you can improve even more with your great work.

  3. Love your cartoons Animan, but I'm a gay girl and I'd like to see cartoons with a girl/girl theme. Do you know anyone who is doing anything like that?
I love the girls in your work BTW, what a pity they don't get together.

    1. Hey Julia. I'm not too aware of all the animation being produced on the web, since I spend so much time drawing. As far as I know, there is no one out there making girl/girl cartoons--but that situation can change at any time. Any enterprising female who has some knowledge of how to make cartoons on a computer could do exactly what Animan does.
I do what I do for many reasons--to entertain gay guys, to show the live-action porn video industry what they've been overlooking (so we can get more of what we want), and mainly to prove that it can be successfully done by one artist whom viewers are willing to help support. I hope to make it worth the artist's while for all web artists out there. My biggest wish is that I'll inspire a new group of animators so that viewers will have a wider variety of animated stuff to choose from. Of course, I expect to see an "Aniwoman" emerging eventually as a bold, new force from that new group.
Thank you for your kind words about my work. I'll be needing some female voices for the next cartoon. If you're interested, I'd love to hear from you!

    2. Thanks for your reply Animan. I guess I'll have to start making my own cartoons. I have used Poser in the past (http://img40.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=95383_WWNew1_123_199lo.jpg) but never had much luck with animating. Right now I just write stories - some might be your kind of thing because I like to write from a male perspective once in a while. BTW I'm a bit shy about recording my voice but I'll give it some thought.

    3. Did you create that picture of Wonder Woman? Wowee! I once tried using Poser. It worked for still pictures, but I found it next to impossible to animate with. I never got results like this Wonder Woman picture, though!
Unlike the days before affordable computer software for animation, I had to draw on paper, photograph it and wait for it to get developed. When it came back, I was always disappointed at the result. Using a computer, my learning curve goes up the more I try animating, because I'm learning every second. Using a Wacom table (any size) will let you draw into the computer. Instead of scanning in piles of paper, drawing the pictures into the computer directly lets the software put it all in order.
What I always do is this: set the frames per second to 15 or 10, draw 3 or 4 rough frames of the character moving in a sexy way, then play it back as a repeating cycle. I can see immediately what needs to be fixed, and see also the results right away. My free video "Assorted Animation" is nothing more than a string of these cycled scenes. That's how I started.
I made a tutorial to show the process. Please go to http://animancartoons.blogspot.com/2012/05/animation-process-is-slow.html and download either the WMV or MOV file. Make sure you click ONLY the light blue box which says, "click here to start download from sendspace". Otherwise, it'll download a bunch of unwanted cyber garbage.
I hope the tutorial is useful for you! And, you're welcome any time to join the ranks of the great Animan voices. :)

    4. Yes, I did the Wonder Woman render. I only did stills or very short animations. I used the FaceGen software to make her look more like Lynda Carter from the old TV shows. Thanks for the tutorial links, I'll look into the Toon Boom software offerings. The capability of their various products seems to overlap a lot. Which do you recommend? My ideal would be to produce something like the cartoon which started the old "Bewitched" shows, although Samantha and her female co-stars will be getting up to some pretty naughty stuff.
A cartoon version of the "Lazy Town" kids show would also be a project I might try. I started to do this with Poser but didn't get very far.

    5. Love the girl with the pink hair!
You're right about the overlap in Toon Boom's software. The cheapest one with the most capacity is "Studio". I used it to make "Twist Party" and "School Fantasy". Later, I upgraded to "Animate" to make "Sex Ed". I found that drawing lines on a tablet was a little smoother with "Animate". "Animate Pro" or "Harmony" are good if you want to add special effects.
So what does Animan recommend? Download the 15-day trial for Toon Boom Studio, and see what you can do with it. https://store.toonboom.com/downloads/try/284

    6. I just downloaded "Twist Party". It's excellent. I especially love the retro 60s references. It's also quite a turn-on, which is odd if you're a lesbian! I really like it when the skinny, smooth guys do the big hairy guys for some reason. I so wanted the girls to start copying the guys.
The drawing is going to be the most difficult. If I want to do cartoons I have to find a consistent style. There has to be some realism to be sexy but I guess more realism means more difficult animation. I think I will aim at something a bit like "Josie and the Pussycats" from Archie, it was always a turn-on for me.

    7. I'm glad you liked Twist Party! That's the one Animan cartoon that has lots of female characters in it.
Sexy characters don't need so much realism--they just need some jiggle and bounce, female or male! Try to draw your characters with as few lines as possible. That way, you'll save time when you have to make a lot of drawings.
"Josie and the Pussycats" is cute and sexy--"The Powerpuff Girls" had some great, easily drawn designs for Miss Bellum or Sedusa. The easy approach is to start with a simple design, and add on to it if necessary, instead of starting with realism and trying to pare that down. If the characters are cute and fun-looking, animating them will be a joy, and not a chore.
