Mars Desarmé par Venus

Here's one of Animan's favorite paintings from the 19th century. It was painted by Jacques-Louis David. On the left, we see  the god of war, Mars, being "disarmed" by the goddess of love, Venus.  From the distant look in his eyes, it appears to not be working. Nobody can wear doves the way Mars can! I love the setting up in the clouds--it's a heavenly day!

  1. I sense some inspiration for a vid!

  2. I can definitely see why it's one of your favorites. This painter must have seen some unearthed murals in an ancient Roman villa, I think. It's rich in color and has the sensuousness that comes across from some ancient murals I've seen. There's a great sense of humanism about it to me. Gods as real humans.

As a cartoon, it may be more fun to write and draw a myth about a lesser god. These stories tend to have more emotional intrigue than the giant odyssey-like stories.

    1. A 12 minute Animan film by its very nature has to get right to the chase.

  4. Here's Venus coming at Mars with that crown of laurels, but he just keeps his distance, veering away, just out of her reach while he holds onto his big spear for dear life. The subliminal message of "avoid the woman--hold onto the spear (male symbol) is crystal clear. Just think of the implications!!

  5. He should hold onto my big spear and guide it straight up his bunghole. I'd love to stab his ass!
