Exactly 6 months ago, I underwent major surgery on my abdomen to remove cancer. And last week, I had a blood test and CAT scan. Today, I saw the doctor who with a smile, told me that according to the tests, the cancer has not come back. That's great news!
Sometimes, it's hard or impossible to get well when there's a huge medical bill staring one in the face. I wish to thank all of you, the dear friends of Animan. Video sales made it possible to get through the surgery and pay for it without going into bankruptcy.
Recently, I find that the Animan videos are being pirated in more and more places--some which I cannot access, such as Russian clip sharing sites, among others. The more videos I make, the more monitoring I have to do, and it's increasing even as we speak.
Thieves and pirates love my work--but they couldn't care less about me as a person. To them, I'm just a worthless machine that cranks out movies for them to exploit. I cannot change or control such beings as they scurry around in the shadows.
Loyal, loving friends enjoy my work, and they like me, too! They speak only the language of generosity and kindness. It's this human connection which I have treasured most in my persona as Animan. It would be easy to live in an ivory tower and just send out my videos and take in money without a word or reaction--but that's no fun for anyone. I know for a fact that I have touched the lives of many (they have written to me and told me so), and it's a thrill beyond belief. Thank you for your kind, generous, and loving support. It is for you that I do what Animan does.
Hey if you want a good idea to protect your video then you need to create a site consisting of all your videos. Leave as many as you want to for free but locked all of your new videos and have members pay to unlock them.

DeleteComputer technology now makes it possible for one man to make an animated movie. But using computers or mobile devices requires making copies, and it's sometimes unfair to movie producers....
It is true--many people cannot afford to purchase my videos, and they have found their own ways to watch them. I do not think of them as guilty--they're doing the best they can.
I wish I were a millionaire--then I'd quit my day job and devote myself to making cartoons!

I still think the site The GuySite.com has come up with a smart unusual method of dealing with pirating. Building on what the first commenter's thoughts, your own site is probably the best way to get up front what you deserve for your work. TheGuySite.com offers a site membership to access their site at a discount. But it's more like being in a club, like a mousesketeer. Each movie is assigned a credit value for direct download or stashing the movie to TGS's cloud server (which is cheaper than downloading). After the member decides which method to use to access a movie, they can choose how many credits to buy at that time. Members get credits at a discount.
ReplyDeleteWith this membership idea of access, true Animan fans and geeks could get the feeling of one-on-one with Animan, and Animan would get better compensation for his work whether someone pirates one of his movies or not. Animan site memberships could pay for building and running the site. Also, an Animan film that is longer is worth more credits, as would be a film with more elaborately drawn backgrounds, etc. For example, Animan's "Carmen" would have cost the largest number of credits to date due to production values. This is what The Guy Site does; like a sliding-scale based on the number of performers and acts being performed per movie.
It sounds wonderful. I'll be honest--setting something like that up requires a great amount of expertise that I unfortunately don't have. Also, setting up a business handling credit cards and the like can be a bit complicated especially when porn is involved, at least as far as I know. I wish I knew how to achieve all these things you mention. I'm just an animator, whose computer savvy reaches only as far as his animation software requires. Selling my stuff on Selz was nice, because it was easy to set up, they made sure the goods got delivered, and it gave me the freedom to make movies.

I'll tell you honestly, when I was making the Lex Stern movie, I was very worried. It's a delicate subject, this father and son thing.
