In real life, many actions happen so quickly that we don't have time to see them as they really are. But when we use a slow-motion camera, we can see that forms tend to become squashed or stretched during action. The animation artist has to exaggerate these actions in his drawings.
No matter how stretched or squashed a shape is, the volume must remain the same. This type of animation gives a feeling of looseness and weight!
