Considering the video is set back in 1964, the bareback action makes perfect sense. As I understand it, condoms weren't commonly used by gay men until the GRID/AIDS scare of the early 80s.

I was only an infant when AIDS became a thing, but I did see that "Gay Sex in the 70s" documentary that came out a few years back. It sounds like it was an incredible time to be living in, but don't expect me to get all Miniver Cheevy about it.
I think that in a way, the AIDS crisis forced the GLBT community to grow up a little. The logistical and political efforts required to secure research funding, civil rights protections, public awareness and support prepared the community for larger struggles, like hate crimes legislation, inclusion within the armed forces, and the same-sex marriage effort.
Of course, we'd all trade that progress away in a heartbeat to have our friends and loved ones back. At least there's some level of vindication there.
I admit this post went seriously off topic, but it's something I've been thinking about and something you, as someone who was apparently there back in the day, could comment on... even if it's just to say I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
Here's Animan's viewpoint: before AIDS, I drew my gay pictures and comics. Amazingly, in those days, I was looked down upon by my fellow gay men. They seemed to feel that "If you want sex, find a partner and do it. If you can't and have to resort to using that perverted porn, then you're a loser." I didn't understand that attitude then, and I don't understand it now. It was because of AIDS that gay men started to depend more on porn magazines and videos as an alternative, and the ridiculous stigma of perversion started to wear off.
ReplyDeleteThe merciless destruction of life caused by AIDS is something we all feel awful about, and at the time of its outbreak, it seemed like the end of the world.
As with all tragedies however, some good things did come out of it. One was a healthy attitude toward porn not as a substitute for sex, but as an enhancement.
